The process of going to a new country for work can be an experience depending what you have to go through. I’ve been lucky that for the most part, these experiences for me haven’t been the worst and have usually gone through quite smoothly (Libya being the exception to the rule).

The time my girlfriend thought I was her Gay Best Friend
I am usually the person who plays pranks on people, albeit phone pranks due to my array of accents. On the other hand, I’m rarely pranked on and I’m not sure why. I know I’m not very gullible, but still I think it could be quite easy prank me (please don’t get any ideas). Which … Continue reading »
The time a tourist responded to my “Do you need help?” with “Sh*t!”
I like accents. I fell in love with accents the first time I flew to London when I was 10 and the airhostess came up to me and said “Tay or coffay?” (Tea or coffee). From that day onwards I wanted to do accents all the time. During high school I was well known for … Continue reading »
The Magnificent World of Roy Marvelous!
One of the great things about blogging is that you soon start discovering other amazing blogs out there. My reader is filled with travel and expat blogs I follow avidly, however every now and then you discover a gem of a blog. In 2010 that gem was Uncornered Market, a brilliant travel blog more about … Continue reading »
Meet the Delusion twins: Beira and Porto
The internet and google brought an age where whatever information you needed, you could find. This is especially useful when travelling and moving around for expats. Every time I move to different city, I immediately wiki the city, to find out more about it. There was one piece of information I didn’t really care about, … Continue reading »

A fortunate series of events… In mama South Africa!
Last week Friday while eagerly awaiting the weekend, I was told that I needed to go to South Africa for a week for work. It wasn’t ideal timing as I had a lot to do in Beira, but sometimes, you simply can’t argue with superiors and going home for work is never that bad.
Another dictator bites the dust…
It was an historic moment for Libya and it’s people. The death of the brutal dictator brought the revolution to a full circle. The manner of his death might not be approved of by the international community, however if you live by the sword, you should by it too. I honestly hope the country can … Continue reading »
Follow me; Like me; Stumble me… I dare you…
For those of you who are easily entertained and enjoy my ramblings on life in Mozambique, I have now created a Facebook page and opened a Twitter account. Unlike the blog, I will use these social mediums for smaller posts and ramblings… Enjoy!
Meet the Parents (and hope Monster-in-Law doesn’t apply!)
“So when do we get to meet your girlfriend?” “Don’t worry mom, July, I’ll be coming to South Africa with my fiancé so that the family can meet her” “Your WHAT?!?!” “Yes mom, my fiancé!” That’s how I broke the news to my mom that I was engaged. I admit that telling her this way … Continue reading »
O Tempo Pirraca… Once again!
Time is a fickle beast. It always does the opposite of what you want it to do. If you need it to slow down to savour a moment, it whizzes past with no regret and dust in your face. If you need time to speed up, it slows down to a snails pace and puts … Continue reading »
Brazilian Expression of the Day
We’ve had a pretty rough week at work and seeing as we have a public holiday tomorrow, I was telling my colleague what I had planned for the weekend. His response was the following… Quero beber até o cú fazer bico! Translation: I want to drink until my ass pouts! Once again too much information … Continue reading »
Brazilian Expression of the Day
This is post is a day late, but I feel like I just had to share this. Yesterday as I was heading to the canteen for lunch, another colleague had just got back from there so I asked what was being served for lunch. He replied the following with a straight face: Eles estão servindo … Continue reading »
The unusual quest to find the fruit flavoured pipe of death in Beira
This has been a rather long and tough work week and there is something missing here in Beira which usually helps in these situations: A good shisha. Unfortunately I forgot my shisha in South Africa and shisha here has been hard to come by until now. A colleague of mine who is also a Libya … Continue reading »
From a Green Rectangle to Kalashnikovs!
Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It’s the world’s most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn’t break, jam, or … Continue reading »
Brazilian Expression of the Day
Working with Brazilians can be an interesting experience as their Portuguese tends to be more colourful than the real version from Portugal. Today my colleague told me this as I was sipping my coffee… Hoje ta quente pra caraio que ate a minha bunda ta suando! Translation: It´s so effing hot today that even my … Continue reading »
When a joke sadly becomes reality…
Halfway through my stay in Abu Dhabi I was asked whether I’d like to relocate to Tripoli to work on one of the company’s projects there. This was in June. I was told I would be mobilized to Libya by August. The Libyan Immigration department had other ideas… My visa took six months to be … Continue reading »
O tempo Pirraça…
There is something about time that makes me think it’s not linear and somehow, has a mind of its own. It seems to know when we want it to go by fast and when we want it to slow down, and it does the opposite. Time simply toys with you, which is why the lyric … Continue reading »
Keep it down next door!!
After the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, the Egyptians have decided that they might want a change as well (the Papyrus Revolution?). News channels and papers are going into overdrive (hoping?) things take a turn for the worst in other countries in the Middle East and North Africa; they clearly want more. They want Tunisia to … Continue reading »
Getting all our ducks in a row… (Literally!)
This morning I opened the door to my house when I saw a duck looking at me from the house across me. My first thought was “I need coffee”. I had my coffee and returned outside to really see the duck there. Odd. Anyway, he/she has been chilling at the compound all day. I guess … Continue reading »
