A popular tourist activity in Madeira is doing the “Volta a Ilha” otherwise known as circumnavigating the island by car. This is another thing that I’ve wanted to do for ages, but never managed to do on trips with my parents, so once again it turned out I would be discovering the island with Raquel’s … Continue reading »

Cable Cars, Toboggans, Steep Climbs and a Splash of Nature – A day in the life of a Madeira tourist
We returned from Porto Santo all rested out and ready for some sightseeing on Madeira itself, though we only had two days to see the island as we would be leaving on Sunday (after arriving from Porto Santo on Thursday night). Even though I’ve been to Madeira more times than I care to remember, I … Continue reading »
Staying up until the stars fall from the sky in Porto Santo
I don’t get too many opportunities to take photos of the night sky and stars, mostly because I’m always in the city and there is way too much light pollution. Which is why one night in Porto Santo I decided to go out on to the beach and miradouro’s for some night time photography. Raquel … Continue reading »
The time incessant travel turned us into beach bums in Porto Santo
My holidays over the last couple of years have never been with abject purpose to relax, but always explore. Though this is always cool and exciting, exploring in an finite number of days is, well, not always relaxing. This didn’t even change with Raquel if you consider our trips to Portugal, South Africa, Morocco and … Continue reading »
Edinburgh: Much more than just the castle!
Edinburgh has been on our to do list for a long time now and every time we try and book something, something else gets in the way of our plans. Finally, a couple of weeks ago we decided that enough was enough and we needed to follow through with our plans, so we booked our … Continue reading »
Cambridge: The city where no one can walk on grass!
Last weekend Raquel and I decided to escape London and take advantage of the sunny weather with a day trip to Cambridge. I am once again reminded of my foolishness of living in this country and never once making the effort of going to Cambridge.
The Delights of Purgatory in London: Circuses, Flamenco, Rock, Opera’s and some much more
I am still in London, even though in December I was told that I would be in Brazil (or the Emirates or Portugal). This unpredictability can very grating especially if you are trying to plan the next couple of months which include a wedding. However, London, in this sense is a great halfway house to … Continue reading »
Give a young prince some money and this is what he builds – Brighton’s Royal Pavilion
Like I said in the previous post about Brighton, I really didn’t know much about the city apart from its pier and the fact it was the place for attempted assassination of then Prime Minister Margret Thatcher. So I decided to download an iPhone guide app for Brighton. It was while looking through this app … Continue reading »
Piering into the English seaside city of Brighton
Years ago I was looking through old photo albums and stumbled upon a photo of my mom by a pebble beach in the UK. I was curious as I had not seen pebble beaches before and asked my mom about it. Her response was “That was in Brighton! I used to love Brighton beach!” For … Continue reading »
Norway… The Epilogue
This trip came about from our dream to see the Northern Lights. We didn’t really care where we would see the spectacle, as long as we saw it. After much research, Norway was the chosen place as it was the place that kept cropping up everywhere.
One fine day in Oslo
Oslo was our last destination in Norway. Even though we was the first city we arrived in, we didn’t stay for long as we had to leave for Bergen. After a fantastic week visiting Bergen, the coast with the Hurtigruten ferry, Tromso and the Northern Lights, we were looking forward to Oslo as the little … Continue reading »
Tromso: The most northern everything in Europe (Apparently)
Imagine not seeing the sun for 24 hours for months on end (easy for anyone who has lived in London long enough). Imagine being feeling so cold that you don’t want to spend any time outside. Imagine frozen and iced roads and pavement, so that when you walk you do it so slowly because you … Continue reading »
Aurora! Now that’s what I call a Borealis – Watching the dance of the Northern Lights in Tromso
After three and a half days on the MS Vesteralen we finally arrived in Tromso with no Northern Lights sighting from the ship and slightly wobbly sea legs. While still on the ship, we arranged a Northern Lights tour so we could at least say we tried our best to see it. Once off the … Continue reading »
The time I spent New Years docked at the Codfish capital of Norway
Our final moments of 2011 and first moments of 2012 were spent on board the MS Vesteralen docked at the city of Kristiansund. Despite the abandoned feel of the town, there clearly residents about as there was fireworks shooting up from everywhere in the town.
“We don’t care you are tourists; We’re shut for New Years” – The abandoned towns on the Hurtigruten trail
The Hurtigruten ferry/cruise has some great attractions to it from the stunning landscapes seen from the ferry to the possibility of seeing the dancing Northern Lights, however for us one of the biggest is the fact that you can visit several towns and cities on the Norwegian coast in one trip. Why they don’t tell … Continue reading »
Our failed chase of the Northern Lights with the Hurtigruten Ferry
When I was planning this trip, the main idea was to see the Northern Lights, so I scoured the internet to see what would be the best way to see them. I stumbled upon the Hurtigruten ferry, which is a ferry service connecting Norwegian towns along the coast which also doubles up as cruise. It … Continue reading »
Bergen: A Harry Potter set or a pretty Norwegian city… You tell me!
“Set amid picturesque and very Norwegian coastal landscape of fjords and mountains, Bergen lays claim to being one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.” Just like the train journey to the city, this quote, set expectations pretty high for Bergen. This has happened before with other cities, where everything I read make it sound like the … Continue reading »
The time I spent my birthday on the most scenic train ride in the World – Oslo to Bergen
I have a habit of always choosing really odd days and ways to travel. Either I put together a crazy itinerary that takes me from Guatemala to Dubai in the space of 24 hours or I decide to meet the in laws after 15 hours of flying. This time I decided to fly to Norway … Continue reading »
The voyage to Norway: An idea, a plane, a train, a ferry and whole lot of snow!
This past trip to Norway was born from one simple desire: To catch a glimpse of the cosmic spectacle that is the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights. For both Raquel and I, the trip would be the realisation of those little travel dreams come, so much so that back in March I … Continue reading »
London has secrets too… Part 2
Continued from London has secrets too… Part 1 In the previous post in this series I briefly spoke about my Secret Cinema experience but as the current event was in progress I didn´t want to be a spoiler and let the cat out of the bag with regards to the movie that the organization was … Continue reading »
