Wave your (Sirloin) for your country!

Today is Heritage Day in South Africa “when South Africans celebrate the diverse cultural heritage that makes up a rainbow nation. It is the day to celebrate the contribution of all South Africans to the building of South Africa.”

Braai! Do it for your country!

However a couple of years ago a campaign started to rebrand the day as National Braai day. Why? Well braaing is a national pastime which most if not all South Africans enjoy (Even those pesky vegetarians). Last year they even released a song called ‘Our Heritage’ featuring Afrikaans group Die Heuwels Fantasties, Soweto Gospel Chior and rappers HHP and JR. Not only is it a great song, but the fact that Afrikaans artists are collaborating with Black artists is a step forward in healing the wounds of the past.

Even though I couldn’t braai today, I wanted to celebrate my South African heritage today by writing a post about it and let the those of you who read my rambling know that:

I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA! (And PORTUGAL!)

It’s good to be patriotic because that is your heritage.
