Rediscovering South Africa: Art on Main in Jozi

This weekend, Raquel and I decided to head to Joburg to get our urban grove back after spending a bit too much time in the tranquility of my hometown. It was also a good opportunity to meet up with some friends of mine who moved to South Africa from Portugal last year, and for Raquel to find out what their take on moving here is.

It was a pleasant weekend with good company, but also a bit of an education on living and working Joburg from two expats themselves. Our friends were absolutely brilliant and apart from being brilliant hosts, took us around various areas of Johannesburg, from the CBD to Melville (2Summers, your posts made Raquel curious!), just so we had an idea of what this city had to offer.

On Sunday they took us to a place I had read about before on 2Summers, Arts on Main. It’s a couple of warehouses which have been converted into an area that reminded very much of Borough Market. It was full of little food stalls, little stores, artist studios etc., something I’d never thought of finding in South Africa.

We had lunch there buying food and Pimm’s form the various different stalls and just sat somewhere enjoying the great vibe and occasional character enjoying this place bringing a lease of new life in Joburg.

I didn’t have my camera with me, but took some photos for you to get an idea of what Arts on Main is. For more information, check out their site.
